What I check before joining a senior engineering engagement
The first conversation tells me a lot.
I want to understand what is actually blocked, who feels the pain, and whether the team needs hands-on delivery, technical direction, or a steadier way to make decisions.
I usually start with four questions:
- What must be shipped in the next few weeks?
- Which part of the system is hardest to change?
- Where does product judgment currently get lost between people?
- What would make the engagement obviously useful after the first month?
That keeps the work honest. A senior engineer should reduce uncertainty, not add process for its own sake.
